Oh I remember this very well ! In our area my husband went to his prom with a witness group in 1977 ,and it was just fine . Then two yrs later they were already starting to say negative things about it so I didn't get to go to mine (I am still not over it LOL) Then the brochure came out in 83 and it was forbidden officially .

JW teens and "scouting" for prom dates? 70's & 80's
by sir82 inposted this on the "school and jws" brochure, which got buried pretty quickly, but i wanted to see if anyone else remembers this, from the 70's & 80's, so i'll start a new topic on it.. .
that ("school and jws") brochure put the kibosh on high school proms in the usa.. in our area at least, going to prom was perfectly fine - as long as you went with a fellow jw.
children of elders, pioneers, etc.

What kind of things are sending up red flags for you ? JWfacts.com is a great site to start with ,it is not sensationalism just facts using the Watchtowers own published words .
The book Crisis of Conscience helped very much too .
Good luck on your research and journey

Label Licker this is the note I sent to the local Elder body after we had been harrassed by them ,hope it helps you .
We had been inactive almost four yrs when two Elders came by for a' sheparding call ' (fishing expedition) all of the sudden they started calling ,and stopping by without warning . I told them twice to stop calling ,and that if I needed anything I would contact them ,but they ignored my advice . So my next step was to visit the local Police and ask for a suggestion. The Officer told me to send a certified letter to the Hall and file a copy with the Police .... It was short and sweet and to the point .
That was two years ago and we have not heard a word from them . Of course I am sure the congregation has been gossiped to about us ,but I really don't care about that anymore I just want peace and quiet and to be left alone .
~~~
Attention to the Elder body of the ***** Congregation Of Jehovah’s Witnesses
I specifically requested D S*** to inform the Elder body to stop calling, and stop coming to my home uninvited . My request has been ignored .
I consider these repeated phone calls ,personal questions and uninvited visits as Harassment .
Disrespect of my personal privacy is unacceptable . These intimidation tactics must come to an end .
You are hereby notified to immediately terminate any contact with me ,including phone calls ,home visits , mail or electronic mail ..
A copy of this letter has been filed with the local Police Station per legal counsel . -
WELCOME ,WELCOME may you find the support and comfort here that your family has unlovingly withheld from you . When I first came here I learned the term 'emotional blackmail' ,and how our JW family uses this technique to guilt us into behavior that they wish .
You are making the best choice for your children to live a happier ,free life .Just remember that when the road seems to be getting rough.
My husband and I walked away from the religion a few years ago for similar reasons as your own . I had known for a few years that things were just not right ,but conintued to believe it was just me ....until I found this site and hundreds of other people that shared my same feelings and thoughts . It did seem like an emotional roller coaster for a while especially when friends and family began the shunning actions . But honestly it does get better and especially if you jump right in and start living life !
Good luck with the transition ,and don't be shy to post when you need a helping hand .
LOTS of JW books in local charity shop.......
by Pams girl inwent to my local charity shop the other day and while i was looking through the books, i happened upon at least 7 books (the name escapes me) that only elders use, several nwt bibles, and many other books, (paradise book?
) plus the smaller books, questions young people ask etc.
in total, i counted at least 80 jw books/bibles.
I just cleaned the garage and tossed a tote full of JW old books from 1976-2006 . I held on to a few older ones from the 1960's ,and the ones my Mom had from the 1930's.
by Stubborn Disbeliever inso my husband and i have 2 daughters.
i've always wanted a whole bunch of kids, yes, even being raised a jw.
my grandma is soooo against children.
Congratulations !!!! I have three kids ,and loved being pregnant each time . Wished we could have had more ,I always wanted to have five.
Your Grandma 's reaction is typical of quite a few Witnesses in our area . I congratulated an Elder on becoming a Grandparent for the first time ,and he was all somber and actually surprised how happy I was for him . Another sister just went on and on about how she didn't want her grown children having kids in this system of things ....I told her that I would be estatic if one of mine had kids anytime soon .
They really live sad lives ...
WT SHUNNING POLICY: What has it done, or could it do to you?
by flipper inhi y'all, this is mrs. flipper.
please share your experiences with this, or possible consequences of being outed.. this recent controversy and resulting arguments all stem from people being outed - possibly losing friends and family because most jw's will blindly follow the watchtower's rules to shun them.. among people i know and experiences read here, the grief and loss caused by this is terrible, and maybe now is a good time to put up some experiences here, and put the focus on the worst villians of all - wt policymakers..
It feels like pure evil to have a family member that you were close to ,and shared many years with suddening act like you don't exisist . My sister in law actually turned a corner in the grocery store and bumped into me when I smiled and said her name and hello ,she made no facial expression no eye contact ,and stared passed me as if I was invisible ....it gave me goose bumps .
My own brother has not spoken to me in over four years . My in laws will speak to us if we call ,but it is short and brief. Sometimes I find myself pretending they are all dead ,because it is easier to think that than to think they CHOSE no longer to be in our lives .
Share the Craziest far out ideas/arguments you have heard about life in the "NEW SYSTEM"
by BU2B inreally the whole thing is ludicrious but it is hilarious and sad at the same time to see grown people arguing about weather there will be cars, planes, eat meat, what about fish, etc in a place as imaginary as oz, yet to them it is reality.. the teaching of a paradise earth was so illogical it really was the first thing that started me on the path to waking up.
just the thought that someone could greet their beloved spouse who had died only to come to the realization that they could never be together again struck me as so cruel, i didnt want to live there even if it was all true.. i have heard jws say they think we might be able to fly, read minds since we will be able to use 100% and some seem to think life would be an endless vacation, with modern conveniences with no thought to all the processes and work that goes into something simple like a pencil.
i love the article jwfacts has on the flaws of any theory or teaching of paradise earth.. what are some things you have heard discussed/argued in car groups, gatherings etc when you were in?.
Survivors of THE BIG A will get their choice of rich worldly dead peoples houses ..... This use to piss me off when sisters brought this up in FS . I asked them one time "If Jehovah hates greediness now won't he still hate it in Paradise ?" They never liked me saying that very much :)
The Small Quiet Voice
by Satanus indo you hear it?
not talking about voices.
i'm talking about that little niggling thing, on the side.
-
troubled mind
This is a great thread ! For years I ignored the inner voice that kept telling me something is not right . I felt like I was being torn apart from the inside . It took me years to finally be still long enough to really listen .
When my Mom was really ill ,and near death, I missed a lot of meetings and had no time to study the literature . I believe this small break from the constant Watchtower influence gave me the needed 'quiet ' to start listening to my inner voice . After I went back to a regular JW routine things were different . That is when I gave myself permission to research the internet .
Like Dagney I was at a meeting when I made up my mind this was the last one I would ever attend . I knew there could be extreme repurcussions from family members ,it felt like I was taking a leap of a cliff ......I was so relieved that there was firm ground under me instead of a fall . Since that time I have found following the leading of my inner voice has brought me much more peace and happiness than any other time in my life !
